1a. Wiesel sets the contrast up by portraying the characters as cheerful, and with every event that happens such as the invasion they were scared, but then they became confident that nothing would happen to them, and when they were taken to aushwits they were scared at first but thought it was a camp to keep them safe not knowing what will actually happen to them

2a.
1."The Germans won't get as far as this. They'll stay in Budapest. There are strategic and political reasons..." -they were confident that the Germans wouldn't get to them
2."The Russian armys making gigantic strides forward. .. Hitler won't be able to do us any harm even if he wants to"
