Wiesel sets the contrast up by portraying the characters as cheerful, and with every event that happens such as the invasion they were scared, but then they became confident that nothing would happen to them, and when they were taken to aushwits they were scared at first but thought it was a camp to keep them safe not knowing what will actually happen to them
